Rep. Walsh brings home the bacon

Rep. Walsh secures grants for RI-CAN, Block Island Health Center

(Charlestown - news release) Rep. Donna Walsh (District 36) secured an additional legislative grant of $3000 for RI-CAN (RI Center Assisting Those in Need) for its food and employment assistance to South County families in need. Rep. Walsh was able to deliver the grant money in time to help RI-CAN meet growing demand just before the holiday season.

“I’ve spoken to RI-CAN director Deb Nigrelli on a number of occasions about how hard it is to keep up with the needs of the many people in our area who are unemployed,” said Rep. Walsh. “Charlestown’s unemployment rate is running at around 10%. While we work at finding ways to restart our local economy and provide desperately needed jobs, we have to help people meet their basic human needs.”

Rep. Walsh was also able to secure a new grant of $3000 for the Block Island Medical Center. “Almost 800 people live on Block Island year round, and they count on the Medical Center for year-round routine and emergency medical care,” said Rep. Walsh. “In this small way, I hope this helps the Center to be able to provide quality health care to year-round residents and summer visitors. Quick access to medical help can mean the difference between life and death.”

This past year, Rep. Walsh has secured nine legislative grants totaling $17,000 for qualified nonprofit organizations in South County. In addition to RI-CAN and the Block Island Health Center, other grantees included Southern Rhode Island Volunteers, the WARM Center, Washington County Coalition for Children, the Charlestown Historical Society, the Charlestown Memorial Day Parade Committee, the Matunuck Elementary School and the Cross Mills Public Library.

Representative Walsh represents House District 36, which covers all of Charlestown and Block Island as well as parts of Westerly and South Kingstown.
