BREAKING NEWS: Chariho budget soundly rejected

Charlestown's vote in favor overwhelmed by Richmond and Hopkinton. Orchestrated opposition campaign?
Charlestown got the message. Hopkinton
and Richmond didn't

Update: The Westerly Sun lists a much smaller "against" vote in Hopkinton than we do but our sources say our number is correct.

The 2013-2014 Chariho School District budget proposal was overwhelmingly rejected by voters on Tuesday. The turnout was small but Richmond and Hopkinton voters showed up in larger numbers than in past votes.

Some details past the break.

The preliminary, uncertified vote totals were as follows:

Charlestown: 149 for, 42 against (191 total votes)
Richmond:    139 for, 536 against (675 total votes)
Hopkinton:    122 for, 491 against (613 total votes)

Total:            410 for, 1069 against

As this goes to press we are trying to track down information about (currently unsubstantiated) rumors that the Republican Town Committees in both Hopkinton and Richmond sent out mailing advocating voters to oppose the budget.
