Volunteers Needed to Pull Water Chestnut from Pond

Water Chestnut is an invasive species in the United States. Its discovery in four water bodies in Rhode Island is a serious development and one that must be handled aggressively.

Volunteers are needed to help pull water chestnut from Chapman Pond at the corner or Routes 91 and 78 in Westerly this Sunday, July 24, from 8 a.m.-noon. The Westerly Land Trust, the Rhode Island Natural History Survey, the town and the state Department of Environmental Management (DEM) have banded together to take the initiative of removing the invasive plant before the population grows into an even larger problem.
