Potential Republican Presidential candidates Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin reacted with outrage at remarks labeling Tea Party Republican members of Congress as "terrorists" for holding the nation hostage to their demands during the just-concluded debate over the debt ceiling.
For a moment, I thought they were both Progressive Charlestown readers, reacting to my comments that the shameful capitulation to the Tea Party hostage-taking as proof our country is negotiating with terrorists.
But, nope, they were referring to Vice-President Joe Biden. Biden had last-minute arm-twisting sessions with members of the Democratic Caucus to cajole them into voting yes to end the crisis.
Biden responded to an argument by Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) who said,“We have negotiated with terrorists. This small group of terrorists have made it impossible to spend any money.” Biden said “They have acted like terrorists.”
So Palin and Bachmann, both famous for violence-inciting rhetoric, thought the Vice President's statement was just plain awful.
And Bachmann found an especially tasteful way to respond: she sent out a fund-raising appeal using the remark as its centerpiece.
She called herself the "top target" of President Obama and the Democratic Party and asked her supporters to sign a petition demanding an apology from Vice-President Biden. And, oh by the way, send a donation of up to $2500, please.
As for the merits of Palin's and Bachmann's phony outrage, their own record of inflammatory, irresponsible (as well as usually wrong) statements speaks for itself.
There are tons of sources on Palin and Bachmann's rhetoric, including lots of video and audio. Here's one from early on in the Obama Administration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epidf-W27XU
