The Power of Prayer

I must admit that I am a regular reader of a blog written by a Texan, Malia Litman. She is unlike most of the neighbors I had when I lived there and she has had some interesting articles about the myths of Rick Perry.

But an article that she posted today, not just about "all hat and no cattle" Rick Perry but important nonetheless, echos my thoughts so well that I felt compelled to share some excerpts with you.

As an adult, I take responsibility for all that happens, both good and bad, even though I might thank God for the good, and pray that the bad things would soon get better.

When a politician says “Lord you are our only hope” we know that he/she is hopeless. George Bush became a born-again Christian when he was 40 years old. He claimed he was on a mission from God when he launched the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Bush explained to Nabil Shaath, who was Palestinian foreign minister at the time, that:

”I am driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, ‘George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan’. And I did. And then God would tell me ‘George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq’. And I did.”

“And now, again, I feel God’s words coming to me, ‘Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East’. And, by God, I’m gonna do it.”

Years later we are far from peace in the Middle East and U.S. soldiers are still being killed in Afghanistan. Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction. During the Bush presidency the national debt grew more than $4 Trillion, which was the biggest increase under any president in US history. On the day President Bush took office, the national debt stood at $5.727 trillion. As of September of 2008 that national debt stood at more than $9.849 trillion. That’s a 71.9 percent increase on Mr. Bush’s watch.

As we prepare for the 2012 election we are faced with Perry, Bachmann, and Palin who each seem to identify God as their most prominent supporter, and the reason they are the best choice for President. The hypocrisy is overwhelming.

Questions everyone should be asking are:

1. If prayer is going to save the country, why was George Bush’s Presidency such a failure?

2. If prayer is the secret to improving the country, why don’t Palin, Perry, and Bachmann go to church, instead of Iowa?

3. If prayer is the solution to all the country’s problems, why haven’t the problems already been fixed? Do you have to be an elected politician to pray? Does God only hear the prayer of a politician if elected?

4. If prayer is the solution, then why does a politician need a bus, a campaign, or money?

5. If Bachmann, Palin, and Perry each talk to God, why is he telling each of them that it is God’s will that they should each run? Doesn’t God realize that by having three Evangelicals running, that they will split the vote among all those who “believe?”
