Trees and utility lines do not mix. |
After several days without electricity, people are not too happy with National Grid. But it's not their fault power was knocked out to 80% of the town by Hurricane Irene, it's the fault of the trees. I hate to say I told you so, but … I told you so, back in June: "Trees along roadways need to be properly maintained and if necessary, cut down and perhaps replanted with varieties that don't grow beyond a certain height or in such a way that they interfere with power lines."
We really do need a tree warden. Not to protect the trees, but to protect the utility lines from the trees.
Shortly after we moved in, a DPW crew was pruning the trees along our street and my husband went out to talk to them. The crewmen were expecting him to argue with them about the need to cut the trees, but we just wanted them to leave us the wood for firewood. Why anyone would argue with free firewood, I don't get, but apparently some people do. And I bet they're sitting in the dark now ...
