Donna Walsh on TV.
Rep. Donna Walsh’s interview on Dave Barber’s “Straight from the Gavel” will be playing numerous times on Cox Public Access this week. Check your directory for times. Donna talks about taxes, economic development and South County’s needs. She discusses legislation she sponsored, what passed, what didn’t and what’s next.

Injun Joe on the warpath
Attorney Joseph “Injun Joe” Larisa, Charlestown’s special counsel for Indian affairs, is keeping busy lambasting the Governor for issuing an executive order to establish a Health Benefits Exchange. This program would help uninsured Rhode Islanders obtain affordable insurance. Larisa’s client, the RI Right to Life Committee, opposes the Health Benefits Exchange unless all insurance plans offered under it are prohibited from covering abortions. Larisa, the ethically-challenged former East Providence mayor, offered a full-throated attack on this program which would help thousands of Rhode Islanders meet their health care needs.

Boys will be boys.
Well, compared to some House Republicans, those recently jailed North Providence council members almost look like choir boys. This week’s big surprise was the amazing criminal escapades of Tea Party Republican from Portsmouth, Rep. Dan Gordon. He spent last weekend in jail on a warrant from Massachusetts where it turns out he has an extensive record of felonies, many of them crimes of violence against women.

I won’t go into all the details of Gordon’s long criminal record – this is “Short Takes” after all – but it was amazing how he defended his record of criminal violence and drug abuse by saying he won’t resign from the RI House of Representatives because his “service” there is his way of “redemption” for years of “self-medication” and for the crimes of attempted murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and for assaulting and threatening to kill his girlfriend – offenses for which he has already served almost six months in prison. Even his Republican colleagues are calling for his expulsion from the House.

Nice shirt!
Gordon did pull off one minor achievement – he is supporting the Republican challenger to our own Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a guy named Barry Hinckley who has been having a very hard time getting anyone to notice he was running. When Rep. Gordon was being hauled into court prior to be remanded to the ACI, he was wearing a sweatshirt with one word: HINCKLEY. That would certainly make me want to seriously consider Hinckley’s candidacy. Not.

A week ago, the House Republican caucus expelled Gordon from their ranks for repeated public attacks by Gordon on his fellow Republicans.

Interestingly, one of the flash points between Gordon and House Republicans was over the ouster of fellow House Republican Bob Watson as Republican minority leader. Gordon disagreed with his colleagues decision to kick Watson to the curb after he was busted in Connecticut on DUI and drug possession. Watson is due back in Connecticut state court in New Haven later this week as his criminal possession prosecution slowly works its way through the system.

NASA says at least 1,200 pounds will
hit Earth. Look out!
Watch your head!
Sometime later this week, NASA says a six-ton obsolete satellite will fall out of its orbit, break up and shower debris somewhere on Earth.

They are certain it will break up into chunks and spread out over a wide area. Some of those chunks weigh several hundred pounds. The problem is NASA doesn't know where and doesn't know when. Just that it's going to happen, but there's no cause for alarm. Trust us.

Here come the space aliens and we're all going to die!
As if falling satellites weren't enough to worry about, the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) reports a sharp uptick this year in the number of sightings – 1,013 nationwide in August alone, compared to a usual average of around 500.

MUFON won't say whether this surge in sightings means an invasion is imminent or whether it just means there are more space alien movies showing in local theaters, "sensitizing" people to report sightings.

Or something else.
