Things To Do in Charlestown - September 15 through 21 - Update

This week we suggest meeting a Senator, helping beautify your beaches and touring your Wildlife Refuge.

Read on for those and more.

  • A Reception for Senator Sheldon Whitehouse will be held at the Charlestown Gallery from 6 to 8 pm on Friday. We wrote about it here.
  • The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is organizing beach cleanup around the state on Saturday from 9 am until noon. To volunteer you can contact our local cleanup leader, Wayne Huot at 401-788-0361 or waynehuot@yahoo.com. The Charlestown group will meet at the Charlestown breachway. (I hoped to be there but this is a major water collection Saturday for Watershed Watch.)
  • On Sunday from 11 am until 1 pm you can join Park Ranger Neil Anthes at the Kettle Pond Visitor Center (50 Bend Road) for a basic class in how to navigate using a map and compass as well as navigating using nature. You will study several maps and implement the new knowledge in the field by making your own map.
  • Then at 2 pm you can jump over to the east entrance to the Ninigret Wildlife Refuge (past Frosty Drew in Ninigret Park) to join Master Gardener and USFWS Volunteer Jenifer LoVetere on a wonderful walk focusing on the native Rhode Island plants found on the trails of the Ninigret NWR.
  • At Theatre By the Sea, Alfred Hitchcock's entertaining (and exhausting) 39 Steps runs through September 18. Marylou Butler gives you a review here on South Kingston Patch.com. If you like comedy on stage this is definately one to see. Please support your local theatre if you can; it's a valuable resource for our community.
