Things To Do in Charlestown - September 22 through 28

Channel your best Swamp Yankee, watch the acclaimed film Carolina, RI: Smallest of the Small, celebrate with Sandra Puchalski, attend a concert, do some bird watching.

We should have enough activities to keep you busy. The weather should be crisp and beautiful with some periods of showers for most of the next week.

  • On Saturday and Sunday you can visit the Swamp Yankee Days festival in Ashaway. As this is being written the website still has no schedule of events (update: schedule is available here) but there will probably be interesting stuff going on from 10 am until dusk each day. More information, like an address for those not familiar with Crandall Field, is available in our events calendar.
  • Colors for a Cause takes fire trucks that our local heroes use on a daily basis to do their jobs and fight their fight and transforms them into large, mobile reminders of the people who are working hard to fight their fight against cancer every day. The Louisiana Chapter of Colors for a Cause is preparing a truck dedicated to Charlestown cancer survivor Sandra Puchalski. You can attend the unveiling, remotely by Internet, this Saturday at the re-opened Haversham Tavern, 336 Post Road (Route 1), Westerly from 10 am until 5 pm Saturday (the big event expected around 11 am). Brennans Gift to Sandi Truck is a 1983 American/LaFrance pumper firetruck that has served the community for years and now has a new life for Cancer Awareness. Stop by if you can to support this fine cause.
  • On Saturday evening at 7 pm you can watch part 1 of the acclaimed film Carolina, RI: Smallest of the Small. It will be shown on Rhode Island PBS, WSBE channel 36 (Cox Cable 8,. DirecTV 36) and will repeat on Sunday at 11 pm. (Part 2 will be televised on October 1 at 7 pm and repeat on October 2 at 11 pm.)
  • On Sunday from 4 to 6 pm our Parks and Recreation Department will hold the final Concert in Ninigret Park for this season, featuring Never Enuff. This concert was delayed because of tropical storm Irene. It's a free event.
  • Each Tuesday at 8 am you can meet in the parking lot next to the Mini Super for a Bird Walk sponsored by the Audubon Society of RI. If you want to learn more contact Phil Budlong at pbudlong@cox.net
  • On Wednesday, September 28, from 10 am to 1 pm, Senator Whitehouse's staff will be on hand at the Community/Senior Center in Ninigret Park to help South County residents work through difficulties with the government bureaucracy. More details are available in our Events Calendar and an appointment is recommended.
As usual, links are provided in the this article and we have more information and more events in ourEvents Calendar.
