1) Like so many of you, I'm encouraged and inspired by the ongoing Occupy Wall Street protests across the country. I hope you've had the chance to spend some time with the local group (many of them first-time activists), based in Burnside Park in downtown Providence. They represent a microcosm of Rhode Island -- a mix of people of all races, genders, and ages, unified around the desire to change a government and a society that in so many ways privilege the very most wealthy of us above the working class and poor.
I've been asked to invite you to an Occupy Providence march and rally to be held this Thursday, in solidarity with Rhode Island Jobs With Justice and the Service Employees International Union:
Join Rhode Island Jobs with Justice for a Solidarity Day in support of Occupy Providence.
RI Jobs with Justice is a coalition of over 45 community, labor, faith-based, and student groups that take action together to level the playing field by building power for poor and working class people. We work to re-establish justice in the workplace, while promoting social, racial and economic justice.
On October 27th we will stand in solidarity with the growing 99% Movement.
The event will begin at Burnside Park in downtown Providence at 5:30. (Union members and community allies are encouraged to come at 5:00pm to participate in Occupy's daily General Assembly).
(Here in Providence we see the seeds of solidarity sown – with hundreds of ordinary people coming together to practice democracy and to fight corporate greed. Rhode Island Jobs with Justice could not be more thrilled to see this happening, to see others taking up the fight that we struggle with on the shop floors and in our communities that are being taken from us by home foreclosures. We are the 99% and we will not accept the way things are. It is time for us to be heard and we at RI Jobs with Justice stand with the voices of Occupy Providence -RI JOBS WITH JUSTICE)
