What's Happening in Charlestown - April 22-30

at the Charlestown state salt barn April 28
We have lots to suggest this week but start by planning ahead and making a reservation to take some of that special junk to the Eco-Depot next Saturday.

Hazardous waste disposal

You know there are some things that you're not supposed to put in the regular trash. You can drop them off at the state salt barn in Cross Mills from 8 am until noon on Saturday, April 28. You can just show up but it will save time if you make a reservation here.

Cross Mills fire station open house

The Charlestown Fire District and the firefighters of the Cross Mills Fire Department are excited to be in their new station on Old Post Road. They would like you attend their open house at the new station on Sunday April 22 from 1 until 4 pm, to thank the community for its support. Take tours of the station and equipment, eat some free food, and chat with the firefighters.

Spring Blooming Native Plants

Also on Sunday, April 22, come to the Kettle Pond Visitor Center (50 Bend Road) at 1 pm and join USFWS Volunteer and Master Gardener Jenifer LoVetere to learn all about which Spring blooming Rhody Natives to add to your garden this year. This program will include a brief presentation, followed by a walk around the Refuge to get more ideas on which natives to plant at your home. (You can attend this presentation and walk and still have time to hit the Cross Mills fire station open house!)

Presidential Primary

The November presidential candidate competition may be all wrapped up but you can still cast a vote in the presidential primary election on Tuesday, April 24, from 9 am until 8 pm. You can find your polling place here.

Share your talents!

The Cross Mills Public Library is having an Open Mic Night starting at 6:30 pm on Thursday, April 26. Come and sing a song, recite a poem, play an instrument and be part of the audience. Snacks will be served. If you plan to perform or have any questions please call 364-6211 (it won't be a telephone audition).

Dedicate a tree!

Join an Arbor Day celebration on Friday, April 27, starting at noon in Grandpré Memorial Park on Route 112 just north of the railroad tracks (this is the park area between Carolina Back Road and Old Carolina Back Road). This park includes trees dedicated to World War One solders who died at the battle for Grandpré, France. A new tree, replacing one that died, is being dedicated at the ceremony here. Thanks to the Conservation Commission for organizing this.

See and appreciate sled dogs

You can time your Saturday trip to Eco-Depot to also visit the Cross Mills Public Library for a sled dog demonstration at 10 am. Becki Tucker will be bringing her canine athletes and sharing their story of teamwork and lifestyle.

Frogs, frogs, frogs

Last, but not least, the Kettle Pond Visitor Center is holding a discussion and walk entitled Fabulous Frogs at 2:30 pm on Saturday, April 28. Join Alyssa Grayson, a USFWS Volunteer and member of Frog Watchers, and get up close and personal with frogs - discussing their life cycle, the challenges they face, and their importance in Rhode Island. This program is family friendly and will include brief walk to a vernal pool to view the wood frogs.

Get the rest of the story on these suggestions and find lots more in our calendar, a free service at Progressive Charlestown. If you know of other great events, let us know by email.
