What's Happening in Charlestown - first-half April Edition

Every week we see new signs of the changing seasons. And we don't just mean the weather. For example The Bakery on Charlestown Beach Road recently opened for the year.

Here is our collection of activities for the first half of April.

Get the specials before they're gone

We mentioned, in the intro, the opening of The Bakery. On the downside we must also announce the end of Cove Mania, those Sunday through Thursday nightly specials to attract our year-round residents to The Cove in the winter. Cove Mania ends on April 20 so get some more visits in before they're gone.

Day-trip to Boston

As reported here, our Parks and Rec Department is hosting a bus trip to Boston on April 14. This should prove to be a fun trip. Register soon by phone, in person, or online. More information here.

Learn shipwreck lore

The Cross Mills Public Library has many great events this month. On Thursday, April 5, at 7 pm Dwight Brown will present a lecture slideshow about shipwrecks off the coast of Charlestown, RI and neighboring coastlines. Dwight is a well-known local historian who has devoted much of his life to researching many aspects of local maritime history.

Control your geese

On Saturday, April 7, at 8 am the Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District will be holding a training session on Canada Goose control on Green Hill Pond. Details here. This is an excellent program, involves scenic trips on the water of Green Hill Pond and volunteers are needed.

Tour a local farm

The Stoney Hill Cattle Company is known for their excellent beef, eggs, chicken, pork, and turkey. Kim, Bill, Nina and John will be holding an open house on Saturday, April 7, from 10 am until 2 pm. This is not to be missed for seeing how quality local farms are run. You will also be rewarded with fresh-baked cookies and homemade gelato. Be sure to ask about their Thanksgiving turkeys; now is the time to reserve your bird. (Disclaimer: Tom and Suzanne always buy their Thankgiving turkeys here.)

School budget vote

The annual referendum for the Chariho school budget will be held on Tuesday, April 10. The polls are open at Town Hall from 8 am until 8 pm.

The history of Westerly granite

The granite industry once employed more than half the residents of Westerly. The authors of the recent book that documents that history will be speaking and answering questions at the Cross Mills Public Library on Thursday, April 12, at 7 pm.

Family Movie Night

The Cross Mills Public Library will hold a free showing of Hop on Friday, April 13, at 6:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Walks and nature

Tuesday morning bird walks, hosted by the Audubon Society of RI, continue through April departing from the Mini Super parking lot at 8 am.

The Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge is hosting a walk on Friday the Thirteenth at 10 am. Join Volunteer Sally Hanson for a great wildlife walk around the Refuge.

The Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association is hosting a bird walk on April 14 at 8 am in the Carolina Management Area. Pre‐registration is required for all WPWA events and is easy to do online. This event is free but please consider making a donation.
