What's Happening in Charlestown - through June 17

Doughboys - the breakfast of champions!
Your What's Happening editor has been distracted developing new websites (here and here). At least that's his excuse for having a What's Happening time gap and he's sticking to it.

Summer activities are ramping up so we will be publishing these lists more frequently. Read on for our suggestions through the middle of the month and a quick look ahead.

Farmers' Markets

We love our farmers' markets but we're still anticipating the opening of the Land Trust's Charlestown Farmers Market on June 22. In the meantime we're enjoying the Cross Mills Farmers Market and the Richmond Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.

Movie Night

The family movie nights at the Cross Mills Public Library are great for residents and visitors alike. This friday the library will be featuring We Bought a Zoo starting at 6:30 pm on Friday June 8. "Set in Southern California, a father moves his young family to the countryside to renovate and re-open a struggling zoo."

Paws in the Park

This annual event is a very popular for people and their pets. This year it will be held in the morning of Saturday, June 9 and more information is available here. When Kingsley and Heidi hear about it there will be no holding them back!

Walks and Birds

On Saturday, June 9, at 9 am you can show up at the Kettle Pond Visitor Center (50 Bend Road) and take a walk through several thousand years of southern RI land use. The acreage that is now Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge has served as a military base, a summer colony, farmland, a colonial plantation and home to Native Americans. Join Dave Clayton on an exploration of this popular location, taking a look at the changing nature of this bit of southern Rhode Island.

On Wednesday, June 13, you can return to the Kettle Pond Visitor Center at 7 pm for an evening with the Wood Warblers. These colorful “butterflies of the bird world” return to Rhode Island each spring from wintering habitat as far away as South America, some nesting here but others just pausing briefly to refuel.

And on Saturday, June 16, head back to the Kettle Pond Visitor Center again at 2 pm for their Birding for Beginners session.

Kayaking the Wood River

Saturday June 9 is a busy day! Another choice of activity is joining the Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association on a kayak tour of the Upper Wood River through the Arcadia Management Area. See the details in our calendar.

A Breakfast Treat!

We have already reported on the upcoming breakfast hosted by the Richmond Democratic Town Committee, for Sunday morning, June 10. It's not just doughboys though those will be the most popular item. Details here.

Looking ahead

The second half of June will be very busy, with concerts, movie nights, yacht racing in Narragansett Bay, and the Big Apple Circus in Ninigret Park. Stay tuned for our next report or check it out in our calendar.

Details for all of the events mentioned above can also be found in our calendar.
