Dems tag sale sets new record

Despite oppressive heat and humidity, big turn-out for Charlestown Democrats' fund-raiser

For most of Saturday, members of the Charlestown Democratic Town Committee staffed sales tables and asked local voters to sign nomination papers to put candidates on the ballot for the election on November 6.

The sale brought in almost 40% more than last Labor Day's "It's Not the End of the World" tag sale, adding to the campaign coffers for what is certain to be a long and hard-fought campaign at every level. The exact amount is still being tallied and you'll see it reported on the CDTC's July 31 campaign finance report.

Treasures and Trash - many of the big-ticket items went early

Sale-goers were asked if they were registered to vote locally, and thus eligible to sign nomination papers for Charlestown candidates, as well as for Rep. Donna Walsh and Cathie C. Rumsey who is challenging Frank Maher (R) for the Senate District 34 seat. Both Donna and Cathie are endorsed by the Charlestown Democratic Town Committee.

Volunteers from re-election campaigns for Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Rep. Jim Langevin also worked the sign-up table.

Just about every eligible voter came by the table to sign the long row of papers arrayed on clipboards until some had to stop from writer's cramp. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!

The Committee also got a boost when Rep. Donna Walsh let them set up nomination papers for sign-up at her well-attended campaign Kick-off last Thursday night at the recently reopened General Stanton Inn.

These next 120 days leading up to the November 6 election will be very important to the future of Charlestown. Charlestown Democrats offer a way out of the long six years of bad government and misguided policies.

But it will not be easy and it will be a struggle.
