Fire destroys home in Cross Mills

The Charlestown Fire District, with support from Dunns' Corner, Carolina and Hope Valley, responded to a rental home on fire in Cross Mills just before 9:30 pm Tuesday night. The fire at the small cottage at 4210B Old Post Road, behind the Pink Pelican gift shop and near the Oyster Works offices, was not reported until it was visible by a passerby.

Although the fire was knocked down rapidly, the house is considered a total loss. The historic Pink Pelican building, only feet from the building that burned, was not significantly damaged. Most fire units left the scene by midnight. The was the first structure fire call for the new Cross Mills fire engine 812.
