Maintaining a centuries old tradition, the
Narragansett Indian Tribe 337th annual gathering will take place on
Saturday and Sunday on tribal lands off Route 2 in Charlestown.
Festivities will start at 1 PM on both days. If
past procedures are followed, you can park at the tribal Health Center near
Town Hall and get a shuttle ride to the powwow site on the Narragansett Indian
Church grounds.
You’ll see traditional dancing with young and old
dressed in traditional garb. There are usually lots of representatives from
tribes all across the eastern US and sometimes farther.
Food vendors, many with traditional foods, will
cover the area with appetizing aromas. You’ll also see lots of booths where
vendors are selling goods ranging from tourist junk to some very fine, high-end
Native American crafts.
The public is welcome. The admission charge is $6
for adults and $2 for children. You can bring a lawn chair (if you want to be
able to sit down, you’d better bring a chair). The grounds are quite beautiful. For more information,
