(News Release) Rep. Donna Walsh (District 36) presented Wakefield-based Southern Rhode Island Volunteers
with a $1000 check to support their work for communities across southern RI. In
Charlestown, they operate the Charlestown Community Center in Ninigret Park.
With
a major focus on the elderly, SRIV delivers meals on wheels, transports the
elderly to medical appointments, offers respite care, and helps with food
shopping and delivery as well as helping older people not feel alone. They also
run a program to collect old cell phones to help military personnel on active
duty stay in touch with their families and friends at home.
The
grant check was accepted on behalf of SRIV by Board Vice-Chair Rosemary Gribbin
and Executive Director Deb Tanner. Ms. Tanner told Rep. Walsh that “many people
talk about issues, but real leaders act as you do.”
Representative Walsh represents
House District 36, which covers all of Charlestown and Block Island as well as
parts of Westerly and South Kingstown.
