Sometime you've got to Kick Butts

Kick Butts Day, March 20, is a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco.

The Rhode Island Tobacco Control Network is participating by holding the premier screening of Addiction Incorporated, a New York Times Film Critic’s pick.

In this documentary, a young drug researcher is hired by a tobacco company, unexpectedly discovers the ingredients of addiction and fuels a national campaign to have it regulated.

This special one-night-only screening, hosted by the Rhode Island Tobacco Control Network (RITCN) and the City of Providence Healthy Communities Office, will be this Wednesday, March 20 at 6:30 PM at The Cable Car Cinema & Café, 204 South Main St., Providence.

There will be a pre-film Reception from 5:30 – 6:30 PM, and a post-film discussion. The minimum ticket donation is $25 and all proceeds to benefit RITCN’s work to prevent youth tobacco use.

Tobacco’s Toll in Rhode Island

Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in Rhode Island, killing more people than alcohol, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined. Over 1,600 adults die each year in Rhode Island from tobacco-caused illnesses. And each year, 1,300 kids under 18 become new daily smokers in Rhode Island.

About Addiction Incorporated

A riveting true story of the tobacco industry’s lies and attempts to silence the scientist who blew the whistle on the industry’s deliberate plans to addict the population. The film shows footage of the scientist, Victor De Noble, testifying at the Congressional hearing where tobacco company executives were caught in their own web of lies. The documentary, written and directed by Charles Evans, Jr., and executive produced by Charmaine Parcero, is a one hour and 20 minute fascinating look at the tobacco industry and its duplicity, as well as the heroes who proved their deception.
