KINGSTON, R.I. –Student volunteers from URI
Habitat for Humanity joined South County Habitat for Humanity last fall on the
Home for a Hero project to build a home for disabled veteran, James LeShane.
As
the home’s completion date nears, the University of Rhode Island will host a
Google+ Hangout with a panel of guests involved in the latest URI-sponsored
project on Wednesday, April 30 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. to learn more about the
initiative and the home’s progress.
South
County Habitat for Humanity’s Home for a Hero broke ground in September 2013 at
Old North Village, Kingston. The home will not only be adapted to accommodate
LeShane’s physical limitations, but will also be constructed to meet federal
regulations for accessibility and Energy Star and LEED standards for energy
efficiency and environmental sustainability. After its completion, LeShane
plans to live in the home with his 16-year-old daughter.During the Google+ Hangout, Lynn Baker-Dooley, who serves as an honorary chair of the “Building Homes Campaign,” and Lou Raymond, executive director of South County Habitat for Humanity, will discuss the importance of the project and URI’s partnership with South County Habitat for Humanity. Student volunteer builders Maria Nero, who is also URI Habitat for Humanity president, and Courtney Graham will join the interview to talk about their experiences building the veteran’s home.
URI Assistant Director of Communications Dave Lavallee will moderate the discussion with questions submitted by viewers in the Livestream chat box. Viewers can watch the Google+ Hangout on their Internet-connected devices from anywhere in the world, and can ask questions during the live interview via Twitter by tweeting their questions and comments and adding the hashtag #URIhero.
