If you are getting sushi in South Kingstown, let your cat be your food tester |
This is the seventh in an on-going series of
Progressive Charlestown articles reporting on those inspections. One thing I’ve
noticed is that when a Health Department inspector comes to call, he or she
will usually cite the establishment for violations. But not always, so a clean inspection
is always worthy of note.
My other big takeaway is that if you are a
sushi lover, as I am, and you order sushi in South Kingstown, you should
probably ask them to cook it before they serve you. Sad to say, there are two
more bad South Kingstown sushi reports in this installment.
In the past, I have
reported on the on-going sanitation issues at what used to be my favorite local
sushi joint, Kabuki in Wakefield. This time, Kabuki is not on the list, but I think that’s only because the Health Department
did not inspect them in March or April.

I also discovered that if you go to visit
someone at South County Hospital (Rhode Island’s top-rated hospital), you
should probably stay away from their Coffee Shop unless you want to end up in a
hospital bed.
You have to make your own decisions about how
much an inspection report affects your decision to spend your money at a
restaurant or food store. Your expectations about that establishment make a
difference – I expect that if a restaurant is going to charge big bucks, they
damned well better be clean, while I am willing to grant a lot more slack to a
low-cost greasy spoon.

But as you’ll see, a number of establishments
that show up in my reports are pretty high end – and dirty – while other more
humble establishments are scrupulously clean. By way of comparison, Rhode
Island’s most famous greasy spoon, the Haven
Brothers food trailer in Providence, has not been cited by the Health
Department for a violation since 2009.
There are almost 600 Charlestown, South
Kingstown and Westerly food establishments in the Health
Department’s database. The Health Department’s small crew of inspectors can’t
hit every one of them once a year, never mind once a month. In this
installment, I include the reports on twelve establishments:
In Charlestown: the Old Mill Dinner (formerly the Gentleman Farmer), the Breachway Grill, Michael’s
food store, the Charlestown Senior Citizens Center and Village Bakery.
In Westerly: Vetranos.
In South Kingstown: Estria, Matunuck Oyster
Bar, Shogun, South County Hospital Coffee Shop, Belmont Market’s Sushi-Go and Trattoria
Romana South.
The "new/old" Old Mill Dinner, the re-branded and re-vamped Gentleman Farmer, got its first Health Department inspection on May 2.
The inspection did not go well with the issuance of four violations for sanitation and food safety problems. I didn't like the idea of the rodent droppings the inspector found or the unsanitary conditions. The old Gentleman Farmer was no poster child for food safety, but they only had three violations in all of last year.
The
Breachway and Michael’s were both hit on April 22. The Breachway drew seven
violations and Michael’s drew 5, all for sanitation and food safety issues.
These bad reports are made worse by the fact both the Breachway and Michael’s
were inspected on February 5, where the Breachway got 10 dings and Michael’s
got 12. Some of the April 22 violations were repeats of the February 2
violations.
That’s not good.
Charlestown’s

March 19 and got a clean report.

The
Charlestown Senior Citizens Center
was hit on April 22 along with the Breachway and Michael’s and was cited for four
violations. When they were inspected on February 5, they had a clean report.
Vetranos in Westerly,
which has been undergoing a major construction make-over, drew only one minor
violation during its March 27 inspection.
Estria, a nice Greek
place in the heart of Wakefield, makes this list for the first time, but not in
a good way. They were inspected on March 24 and drew six violations.
The
Matunuck Oyster Bar needs to clean
up its act, literally. This is a great locavore’s delight, but they had a bad
inspection report on February 13 with eight violations and have drawn three
more on April 9. Gotta get that sorted out before the tourists flood in.
The
upscale Trattoria Romana South in South
County Commons makes my list for the first time by virtue of earning 11 Health
Department violations as a result of their March 25 inspection.
South County
Hospital
– our state’s best hospital – needs to deal with its coffee shop. I ran their report
largely as a whim and was disappointed to see that they were dinged on February
8 with 8 violations and again on March 20 with 3 more. They were not trivial
violations and certainly not what you would expect.

Now,
about South Kingstown and sushi. I have been featuring the high-priced Kabuki in Wakefield in my last several
reports. They flunked every inspection between March 2013 and January 2014,
drawing 47 mostly nasty violations. Lucky for them, they were not inspected
since January so I have nothing new on them.
But
the South Kingstown alternative to Kabuki, the chi-chi Shogun in South County Commons seems to be following Kabuki’s lead,
drawing 16 nasty violations during their March 25 inspection. And you can’t
even count on sushi to go from the recently renovated Belmont Market. Their Sushi-Go concession was cited for 7 bad
violations during their April 14 inspection. NOTE: Belmont itself was issued
seven notices of violation when it was inspected on January 2.
I
repeat my warning: if you want sushi in South Kingstown, make sure they cook it
before they serve it.

establishment for yourself by using the Health

Food-contact surfaces: cleaned & sanitized
Inspector Comments
The food-contact surfaces of equipment and utensils were not sanitized.
The required utensil surface temperature of 160 degrees F was not
achieved during the sanitizing cycle of the dishwasher at the bar as
evidenced by the failure of the themolabel (temperature indicator)
affixed to the surface of a utensil to turn black. Machine to be serviced
and invoice to be faxed to RIDOH. All equipment and utensils to be washed
rinsed and sanitized using kitchen facilities until unit is working
properly.

Working containers of dry ingredients such has flour and breadcrumbs
are not labeled with the common name of the food. Working containers
holding food or food ingredients that are removed from their original
packages, such as flour, herbs, salt, sugar and spices must be labeled

A splash guard is needed at the handsink in the kitchen which is
located next to a prep table. Currently food could be contaminated from
splash during prep.

Inspector Comments
Bowl is being used as scoops in containers of calamari. Utensils used
to dispense non-potentially hazardous foods such as sugar and flour must
be stored in the food item with their handles above the top of the food
within the container. The (ice scoop) is stored on an unclean surface
(top of ice machine) between uses. During pauses in food preparation,
utensils must be stored on a clean surface or in a clean protected
location.

The sink used for food preparation is lacking an air gap. A direct
connection must not exist between the sewage system and a drain
originating from equipment in which food is placed.
