The Rotary Club of Chariho announced this week that it is extending the deadline for high school seniors to apply for scholarships to June 1.

The Club annually presents several $1,000 Brad Friel Memorial scholarships to Chariho students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service. Students can re-apply for additional funding in subsequent years if they meet the club’s qualifications.

“Our application process had changed this year, and judging by the number of applications we received, it was clear that had created some confusion,” Scholarship Committee Chair Frank Hopkins said. “So in the spirit of fairness, we thought we should extend the deadline.”

Applications can be obtained through the school guidance offices or at the club’s website, www.charihorotary.org, by clicking the “Brad Friel Memorial” link under Scholarships in the left side menu.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 160 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary clubs.

Rotary Club membership represents a cross-section of the community's business and professional men and women. The world's Rotary Clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.

In our area, Chariho Rotary provides donations to multiple charitable causes, sponsors blood drives, provides volunteers at the RICAN food pantry, awards some $16,000 each year in scholarships, and most recently provided labor and funds to build the Chariho High School’s new courtyard.
