Kayaking on the Wood River
This summer you can take an evening kayak on the beautiful Wood River as we enjoy one of the season's Full Moons; take an Introduction to Kayaking course; or experience the magic of bioluminescent jellyfish on a joint event to a salt pond.

Space is limited. All events require pre-registration on-line at www.wpwa.org/events.php or by calling 401-539-9017. See details for each event below.

There will be three Super Full Moons this summer!   Take advantage of them by joining WPWA on one of our Full Moon paddles.  The first will be held on Saturday, July 12 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the WPWA Campus, 203 Arcadia Road, Hope Valley, RI.  Put your boat in the Wood River at the WPWA campus as the sun sets and paddle back as the full moon rises over the river.

Next we will visit the beautiful Queen's River for an Almost Full Moon Paddle on Saturday, August 9, 2014 from 7 to 9 pm.  We will launch from the historic Kenyon Grist Mill and paddle upstream on the Glen Rock Reservoir into the Queen River.  On our return, participants will be treated to Kenyon's famous Johnnycakes.

The last summer full moon paddle will leave from the WPWA Campus again on Sunday, September 7, from 6:30 to 8:30.  Late summer blossoms such as Cardinal flowers, Joe-pye weed, and boneset will be in abundant.

During these delightful paddles we will be sure to see dragonflies, damselflies, numerous birds and unique aquatic flowering plants.  These are all easy paddles, suitable for all levels  including beginners. The fee is $10 for WPWA members and $20 for non-members. Bring your own boat or use one of WPWA's 9-foot single person kayaks for an extra $10 for members or $15 for non-members. Boats may be reserved when you register for the event.

If you have always wanted to learn to paddle a kayak, or want to improve your skills, WPWA is offering an Introduction to Kayaking Course on Saturday, August 2, from 9 am to 6 pm.  This course will cover basics such as safety, clothing and gear, and paddle strokes.  We will also practice self-rescue techniques.  Participants will come away from the course with the confidence to paddle on ponds, lakes, and quiet rivers.  The fee is $40 for WPWA members; $50 for non-members, and includes kayaks, paddles, and life jackets.

For a very special paddle event, WPWA, Salt Ponds Coalition (SPC), and the Ninigret Wildlife Refuge will jointly sponsor the Row and Glow Bioluminescent Paddle on Thursday, August 22, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Because this event is so popular we've added a second night.  During warm summer months, comb jellyfish make their way into the salt ponds. One of the most remarkable characteristics of these small creatures is their ability to glow when agitated. To experience this natural light show it must be dark with calm water. Paddlers will be amazed by the colors emitted by the comb jellies in the water with every stroke of their paddle. Be sure to bring headlamps or flashlights. A limited number of single-person 9 foot kayaks are available through WPWA for an extra donation. The fee is $10 for WPWA & SPC members and $20 for non-members. Bring your own boat or use one of WPWA's 9-foot single person kayaks for an extra $10 for members or $15 for non-members. Boats may be reserved when you register for the event.
