VIDEO: Getting a Look LIVE as a Rare Vampire Squid

Swims into Camera Range

Mystic, Conn - The vampire squid lives deep in the ocean where little or no light penetrates, often out of sight and out of mind, but the crew of E/V Nautilus and those joining live were treated to a remarkable experience as they watched one of these rare and amazing animals swim confidently into range of their high-def underwater cameras.

This is just one of the incredible moments, yet to come, as Nautilus Live Theater goes online for another LIVEseason at Mystic Aquarium with the team on board the E/V Nautilus.  The rare sighting of a vampire squid took place in the Gulf of Mexico where scientists on board the E/V Nautilus are studying both natural oil and gas seepage and ecosystem responses and effects, directly attributable to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The team is focusing on deep-sea corals, animals that live on and around them, and their response to the oil spill.

Visit Mystic Aquarium and participate in one of the Nautilus LIVE shows as the ship makes her way from the Gulf of Mexico onto more adventures, where discoveries happen in real time and those lucky few that are in the theater setting get to experience it all live as it is happening.

Nautilus LIVE shows began on June 14 and visitors can join the expedition LIVE three times a day through the end of August.  Nautilus LIVE show is included with admission to Mystic Aquarium.
