Wood River Health Services holds comedy night on August 16

“Deaf Comic” performing for Wood River Health Services comedy night
Mike Murray, the Deaf Comic, likes to hear what his kids have to say when they don’t think he’s listening.

“I lie on the coach like I’m napping and they think I’ve turned off my implants,” he said. “You wouldn’t believe what these kids have been getting away with all these years!”

Murray, who had been completely deaf most of his life and received cochlear implants at the age of 40, had always tried to take his handicap lightly, and now he shares that outlook on stage.

Since a friend convinced him to attend a comedy ‘boot camp’ in 2008, he has won awards in the Rhode Island Comedy Festival and Catch a ‘New’ Rising Star competitions and plays to sold out crowds.

On Aug. 16 he will be the main attraction at Wood River Health Services’ 6th annual “Laughter is the Best Medicine” dinner fundraiser at The Pavilion in Ashaway.

The evening will begin drinks and hors d’hoeuvres at 6:30, followed by dinner and the comedy show. Live and silent auctions will include a kayak donated by URE Outfitters in Hope Valley, a dinner and theater evening in westerly, an “instant wine cellar’ and a cake baking class.

Tickets cost $75 and are available by calling David Henley at 401-387-9628.
