Texas goes nuts

Gov. Abbott Orders Texas Militia To Prep For Martial Law ‘In Collusion With Wal-Mart’
Greg-Abbot-MLTHE BACKGROUND:

In order to be combat ready, the military periodically holds war games. The games are usually held in lesser populated areas with a climate and topography similar to possible future military “hot zones.”

This year’s games are code-named “Jade Helm 15” and are being held in parts of several southwestern states that resemble the climate and topography of the middle east. It commences July 15th and continues until September 15th. The time of the year guarantees that the games will be conducted in “hot zones”, temperature wise at least.

THE FANTASY:

Usually when the military conducts large-scale war games, there are people who are convinced it’s all a preparation for a military takeover in one form or another. This one has the nut cases in a frenzy:

There were even rumors of mass gun confiscations and conspiracies linked to Wal-Mart, as reported by The Washington Post:

Some are understandably worried about how it’ll affect their daily lives, while conspiracy theorists claim it’s an attempt to institute martial law, possibly in collusion with Wal-Mart.

Having harkened to the alarm, Texas governor Greg Abbott ordered the Texas State Guard (not the National Guard) to “monitor” Jade Helm 15. Of course, he couched it in different terms.
To address concerns of Texas citizens and ensure that Texas communities remain safe, secure and informed about military procedures occurring in their vicinity, I am directing the Texas State Guard to monitor Operation Jade Helm 15.
THE FACTS:

War games vary in size, depending on their purpose. This particular one is one of the larger and it includes unconventional warfare. Or as the military puts it, “Realistic Military Training” (RMT).

It is primarily a “special ops” operation with about 1200 participants. The games will be spread out over seven states, with some of the states “friendly”, some “hostile” and the rest somewhere in between. That pretty much mirrors politics in the middle east.

Some parts of the war games take place on non-governmental land and include exercises in infiltration. Some of the military personal will be in civilian clothing (with identifying arm bands) and carrying firearms loaded with blanks. This is being done with the approval of and coordination with local officials as well as local, state and federal law enforcement.

This is not a takeover of Texas or a rehearsal for American martial law. This is a practical exercise in warfare as it’s practiced in the 21st Century. Most people don’t know it, but when we kicked the Taliban out of Kabul, we did it with less than 1000 personnel on the ground. Special Ops personnel.

When asked about the governor’s action, White House Secretary Josh Earnest had this to say,
I have no idea what he’s thinking. I think what is clear is that I feel confident in expressing to you without having a lot of detailed knowledge of the particular exercise is that the civil liberties and constitutional rights of Americans citizens will be in no way affected by this exercise.
On this one, I think I’m going to go with the government rather than the conspiracy buffs.
