Rep. Justin Price: Pay attention

URI professor will chair Climate Change Science Board
Gov. Gina M. Raimondo announced her choice of Peter V. August of the University of Rhode Island as chair of the newly-created Rhode Island Executive Climate Change Science and Technical Advisory Board. August, along with the other board members were confirmed by the Senate in June.

August is a distinguished professor in URI's Department of Natural Resources Science and is past director of URI's Coastal Institute. His research and hands-on work with students highlight his dedication to the stewardship of Rhode Island’s marine and terrestrial resources.

"I believe this group of dedicated professionals will help Rhode Island develop real world solutions to addressing the impacts climate change will have across our state," said Raimondo. "I want to thank Dr. August for committing his time and knowledge to help protect our state's most important resources for generations to come."

"Dr. August has been involved in climate change issues and environmental management in Rhode Island for several decades, and he has worked closely with the Governor's Office and numerous state and federal agencies through the years," said URI President David M. Dooley.

"As founder of URI's Environmental Data Center, he has applied cutting edge mapping technologies to address land conservation issues. He is an award-winning researcher, and his leadership and expertise will be of great benefit to the statewide climate change advisory board."

"With Governor Raimondo's choice of Dr. August as chair, Rhode Island will continue to be a leader in effectively addressing climate challenges," said DEM Director Janet Coit. "I cannot say enough about the dedication and level of expertise Dr. August will bring to this board in order to help forge a better, more resilient Rhode Island."

The nine-member Climate Change Science and Technical Advisory Board was created as part of the 2014 Resilient Rhode Island Act to provide guidance to the Rhode Island Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council (EC4) on issues such as aligning academic research around issues of climate resiliency, communicating scientific and technical information to the public, and taking inventory on public and private sector work to achieve greater coordination and efficiency.
