New England's Special Ocean Places!
President
Obama is considering creating the Atlantic Ocean's first-ever
Marine National Monument off the coast of New England, which would help
protect fragile and vulnerable ocean waters and hundreds of species of
ocean wildlife from industrial fishing, mining and other threats. These
areas include deep sea canyons, which plunge to depths greater than 7000
feet, and seamounts, which rise thousands of feet above the sea floor,
and create unique habitats supporting tremendous biodiversity and fragile
ecosystems that are home to corals, fish, marine mammals, turtles, and
more.
Protecting
our ocean planet is the foundation of all we do here at Mystic Aquarium and
Senior Research Scientist Dr. Peter Auster has been at the forefront of
this and related conservation initiatives focused on the design and role
of marine protected areas. Our mission to care for and protect our ocean
planet through conservation, education and research echoes the purpose
behind creating Marine National Monuments to safeguard delicate ocean
ecosystems. Conservation drives our decisions and actions, while
education and research propel us forward to our ultimate goal of helping
future generations enjoy vibrant, healthy oceans.

I urge you to
permanently protect the New England Coral Canyons and Seamounts region
southeast of Cape Cod and Cashes Ledge in the Gulf of Maine by
establishing the Atlantic Ocean's first-ever Marine National Monument off
the coast of New England. These iconic ocean treasures are home to
hundreds of species of rare and unique marine wildlife including cold
water corals, endangered whales, and seabirds. They're also jeopardized
by pollution, industrial fishing, climate change and other threats.
Please help protect these ocean waters and their marine life forever --
and secure your environmental legacy -- by establishing a Marine National
Monument off the coast of New England.
