It’s only a federal disaster if it happens in a Red state

Lindsey Graham Has the Nerve to Request Aid for SC After Blowing Off Sandy Victims

The recent flooding in South Carolina is being called a “1,000-year flood,” and it probably is. Or was, until we started cooking the planet. Let’s hope there’s no other one like it too soon.

The people of the state need assistance, and Republican Governor Nikki Haley reached out quickly, and verbally—she said she had no time to fill out the necessary paperwork—to the Federal government for help. The administration declared a state of emergency, and FEMA’s been dispatched and is now on the case.

Now South Carolinian Lindsey Graham, a Republican presidential candidate,is pleading for disaster-relief funds for the Palmetto state. And the folks there certainly need them.

But wait. Just a cotton-pickin’ minute.

This can’t be the same Lindsey Graham who voted against disaster relief for the people of New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy, can it? If so, how come…why…hm. So South Carolinians deserve help, but New Jerseyites don’t?

Wolf Blitzer asked Graham about this seeming hypocrisy, and Graham responded, “I’m all for helping the people in New Jersey. I don’t really remember me voting that way. Anyway, I don’t really recall that, but I’d be glad to look and tell you why I did vote no, if I did.” 

Um, you did. Nice try; actually, that’s a pretty lame answer. And we’re waiting for you to get back to us, Senator, with your reasons for telling the people of NJ to go fuck themselves.

So, there weren’t any other 2016 Republican candidates caught being this hypocritical, right? Wait, what? Oh… I see there’s that Ted Cruz guy, who supported asking for relief funds when his state of Texas got flooded in May 2015. Seems he was also against the relief package for Sandy.

Republicans hate government help for others—that’s called a “handout”—but are ready to demand it for their own people as “disaster relief.” This kind of self-serving distinction about as cruel and cold-hearted as it gets when bad weather hits your town.
