Elaine
Morgan, who looks like she's trying to read an eye chart in this photo.
There
actually is a long queue of individuals we have lined up for “Crazy/Stupid
Republican of the Day” profiles, and Elaine Morgan, a first term
State Senator and dry cleaner from Rhode Island who was not someone on our
radar until last week, when she managed to say something so bigoted and
ignorant, it managed to catapult her right up near the front of the line.
Morgan upset incumbent Democrat Catherine Rumsey in the 2014
elections with 52% of the vote, and at first, to her
credit, it seemed like she might be able to do some good in politics, pressuring her colleagues hard to increase the penalties for
sex trafficking to up to a sentence of 50 years.
However, at
the same time, Morgan also voted against the state of Rhode Island’s attempt to raise
the minimum wage, which is frustrating to see considering the United
States is currently in the midst of its worst period of income inequality in
almost a century, and in her own words, she describes that the people know “MONEY WORKS BEST IN OUR POCKETS”. Which is
hardly an articulated view on the subject.
Now, after reading that opening, Elaine Morgan might not seem like the usual fare that we serve up on this blog, where things tend to be far more extreme, if not outright insane and/or bigoted.

Well, that seemed to be the case until
she jumped headlong into the debate over Syrian refugees after the outcry that
they could be responsible for a terror attack like the one in Paris on Friday
November 13th, 2015.
But that reaction
is exactly what Morgan showed everyone after she got a letter from a
constituent who was angry about the idea that the United States would
potentially allow Syrian refugees to seek refuge and potentially emigrate to
the United States, and she sent them a horribly Islamophobic reply, and
accidentally CC’ed EVERY MEMBER OF THE STATE LEGISLATURE her response.
And WOW,
is it an inflammatory and disgusting take on Islam:
”I do not want our governor bringing in any Syrian refugees. I think our country is under attack. I think this is a major plan by these countries to spread out their people to attack all non Muslim persons. The Muslim religion and philosophy is to murder, rape, and decapitate anyone who is a non Muslim.
If we need to take these people in we should set up a refugee camp to keep them segregated from our populous. I think the protection of our US citizens and the United States of America should be the most important issue here.”
Alright,
so let’s recap… she thinks a religion with 1.5 billion practitioners is taught
to murder, rape, and decapitate any outsiders, which you’d think would make the
world a more hostile place.
But her proposed idea of “camps” where such
individuals could be separated from Americans for our safety… she might want to
check her history books and see how messed up that sort of idea was when it happened to our Japanese citizens during World War II.
Anybody who has a cursory understanding of American history knows that in any
book on the subject, that’s one of our most shameful chapters.
She might be
able to see that if she stopped squinting all the time and opened her dear
Republican eyes a bit wider.
When asked about her e-mail the next day, she didn’t apologize, and continued to suggest internment camps as an option, saying:
When asked about her e-mail the next day, she didn’t apologize, and continued to suggest internment camps as an option, saying:
“We have veterans in the streets starving, alcoholics, drug addicts. I can see taking Syrian refugees in, but keeping them all centralized – it sounds a little barbaric, but we need to centralize them and keep them in one central area.”
When
it was just a private e-mail, it still would have been an ugly thing to report
about. But after she goofed and sent it to everybody, to actually DOUBLE DOWN
on internment camps?
Elaine Morgan, you aren’t just crazy… you’re our new CSGOPOTD. And here’s hoping your ugly comments have won you a one-way bus ticket out of Providence.
