Town committees line up behind Cathie Cool Rumsey

Town Democrats pledge to fight to win back Senate District 34 seat

Charlestown’s Democratic Town Committee became the latest group within Rhode Island Senate District 34 to endorse the candidacy of Cathie Cool Rumsey for State Senator.

The Richmond and Exeter Democratic Committees have already endorsed her.

“I feel honored and grateful to town committee members.” said Cool Rumsey. “My campaign will be about restoring accountability to the tax payers so they can trust state government is working for the people, not special interests or party ideology.”

“These town committees will be working hard to turn out voters in this important and historic election. So I really value their support for my campaign.”

Cool Rumsey served as state Senator for District 34 in 2011-2012.

During that time, she co-chaired the Behavior Health and Firearm Safety Taskforce, the Senate task force on the Department of Children Youth and Families and the Family Care Networks and vice-chaired the joint Permanent Child Care Commission.

Several laws she sponsored and co-sponsored were enacted into law including:
  • The “Rhode to Work” action plan to equip Rhode Islanders with the skills they need to succeed in the jobs of today and tomorrow
  • Landmark health care cost control legislation to curb rate hikes, ensure quality, and improve access
  • A new law to convert food waste into compost and energy and promotes green jobs [Editor's note: this legislation has helped Charlestown's Earth Care Farm]
  • Helped low-wage parents seeking decent jobs through job training and Work Readiness programs with better child care assistance
Robert Johnson said, “As chair of the Exeter Democratic Town Committee, I am pleased Cathie Cool Rumsey is running to win back the senate seat to represent Exeter (Charlestown, Hopkinton, Richmond, West Greenwich).

“The past two years have been a real loss for us. We need legislators who will focus on our priorities not just repeat party sound bites. We need leadership! That’s what Cathie Cool Rumsey will bring back to our community. Please join me in supporting Cathie’s election campaign,” Johnson said.

“I want to return to the Senate because there is work that needs to be done for the people of this District and the state,” said Cool Rumsey. “We need good jobs, small business growth, improved infrastructure and efficient government, not negativity.

"Opposing bills without presenting better solutions doesn’t bring balance to the General Assembly, it’s being part of the problem,” continued Rumsey.  “Instead of echoing ‘the Voice of No,’ we need leaders that ‘know’ how to work towards finding solutions that will effect positive change to benefit Rhode Island.”
