Wood River Health Services hosts farmers’ market with great local food and nutrition information

A “pop-up” farmers market will be held on Wed., July 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Tower Street Community Center in Westerly. 

The event is being hosted by Wood River Health Services and the Department of Health’s WIC Program.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits and Senior Vouchers will be accepted.

A pop-up market is when a farmer comes directly to a site and sets up their stand (as if it were at a local farmers market). Whepittituck Farm from Stonington will be selling a variety of fresh, local produce.   

Sarah Giorno, WIC Nutritionist and Coordinator, will be helping customers with any questions and will have an additional educational activity for families who want to participate.  There will also be a SNAP representative to answer questions and help to fill out applications.

Wood River Health Services is the Federally Qualified Community Health Center for southwestern Rhode Island, providing medical and dental care and social services to over 9,000 area residents.

The center also administers the area WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Nutrition Program, provides a nationally recognized chronic disease management program, has available onsite lab testing in cooperation with Westerly Hospital, including blood work, x-ray and mammography, and provides referrals for behavioral and mental health counseling.

Sliding scale payments are available to those who qualify.
