If the Clinton Foundation is so corrupt, why did Donald Trump donate to it?

Trump Gave 6-Figure Donation to Clinton Foundation

Trump published a statement regarding the Clinton Foundation on his website this Monday, calling it “the most corrupt enterprise in political history:”

"Hillary Clinton is the defender of the corrupt and rigged status quo. The Clintons have spent decades as insiders lining their own pockets and taking care of donors instead of the American people. It is now clear that the Clinton Foundation is the most corrupt enterprise in political history. What they were doing during Crooked Hillary’s time as Secretary of State was wrong then, and it is wrong now. It must be shut down immediately."
Later that day, Steve Doocy of Fox News asked Trump about his statement:

STEVE DOOCY, FOX NEWS: “I see that your campaign just sent out a statement a few minutes ago regarding this, and you write: ‘It is now clear the Clinton Foundation is the most corrupt enterprise in political history.’ You know, there are a lot of people who are not up to speed on what the Clinton Foundation has been doing that you feel is illegal.”

DONALD TRUMP: “Well, I think it’s been really well documented in the book and the book has been absolutely approved by so many people. You’ve had accounting firms going in there, you had so many people going in and it’s pay for play. I mean, if you look at it, it’s pay for play. So many things happen, money is paid, and then all of a sudden, lots of good things with the [inaudible] money. Very, very bad situation.”

Trump doubled down on his claim telling the crowd at an Austin campaign rally that “It is impossible to figure out where the Clinton Foundation ends and the State Department begins. The specific crimes committed to carry out that enterprise are too numerous to cover in this speech.”

However, as CNN reported, “Trump’s name is listed on the Clinton Foundation’s website as having given between $100,001 and $250,000.”

Donald Trump’s campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Wednesday that the Republican nominee did not participate in “pay to play,” despite his donation to the Clinton Foundation.

“Was your candidate donating that money so that he could have access to Hillary Clinton whenever he wanted,” Cooper asked.

“No, it seems like he had access to her anytime he wanted. She went to his wedding,” she replied, adding, “No, he was not paying to play.”

Incredibly, and despite Trump’s earlier statement and remarks regarding the Clinton Foundation, Conway insisted that Trump made the donations because he believed the foundation does good work.

“The Clinton Foundation does a lot of good work and I also want to say that for the record that they do,” she said, adding: “They do good work. And let’s hope that that money went to good use.”
