A Democratic activist has uncovered comments made by
conservative Rhode Island House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello urging Rhode
Islanders to support Donald Trump.
In the video, which was recorded in January right before Trump was sworn in, Mattiello, says, “we should be supportive of the President-elect.”

Uncovered by Smithfield activist Dave Fasteson, these comments were made in an interview with Capitol TV reporter Margie O’Brien.
A state-sponsored reporter, O’Brien typically does not ask the most hostile questions, but in this interview with Mattiello and his deputy Joe Shekarchi, she asks them about Trump.
Nominally a Democrat, Mattiello is known for his extremist brand
of conservatism, particularly when it comes to issues of race and immigration.
Earlier this year, Mattiello forced a resolution praising Trump through the Rhode Island House of Representatives, using a special procedural maneuver known as a voice vote to prevent Representatives’ votes from being recorded in the public record.
