Ocean

To many of us, Long Island Sound is known as a safe, calm body of water with beautiful coastal shorelines.  Yet, this body of water is much more complex than we think!  Created by glacier melt, it is a mix of fresh and salt water churning together to form an ecosystem called a tidal estuary.  One of the regions largest estuaries with an area of 1,320 miles, the Sound is home to hundreds of animal species.

Over the last 30 years, Connecticut has made a significant commitment to protecting and restoring the sound, and Mystic Aquarium is working with CUSH on the Unified Water Quality Study to determine what we can all do to help reduce water run-off.
