URI’s Inner Space Center to offer weekly tours this summer

The University of Rhode Island will offer weekly tours of the Inner Space Center, the facility that brings real-time oceanographic research to Rhode Island and the world, beginning July 18.

Tours will be offered on Tuesdays at 11 a.m., through Aug. 22. The cost is $5 per person and registration is required, at least 24 hours in advance, through http://innerspacecenter.org/booking/. No school or camp groups during the public tours please.

Located at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography, 215 South Ferry Road, on the Narragansett Bay Campus, the Inner Space Center is an international leader in ocean science research, exploration and education.

The center uses cutting-edge technology, including telepresence, to make it possible for scientists and students to participate in ocean-going research expeditions without leaving campus. The excitement and thrill of ocean discoveries are brought to onshore audiences worldwide.

Tours will include a walk through the Inner Space Center, a display of artifacts recovered from ancient shipwrecks, viewing of video footage of previous expeditions and a visit to the facilities where live television and Internet programming about ocean exploration is produced.
