Summer at CHS has
certainly moved along quickly and has brought both new memberships and
acquisitions. Upon request, this year we plan to extend our regular
open hours through Columbus Day Weekend, Friday & Saturdays, 11:00 AM
to 1:00 PM. We are also happy to open upon request to accommodate
visitors and research inquiries.

MEET
AMOS GREENE, JR.
|
|
|
|
In honor of one of our Town's founding
families and in conjunction with the upcoming Revolutionary War Encampment
on the Amos Greene Farm, CHS has commissioned a recreation of the authentic
period clothing of our own Captain Amos Greene, Jr.
Captain
Greene's father built his colonial home and farm circa 1740. It was
Amos, Jr. who rose to the occasion as an American Patriot in 1776 and led
his local militia in the Revolutionary War, including the Battle of Rhode
Island. Musters were held on this farm property and the original
homestead still stands as it did back then.
The
replica clothing depicts the actual material and style that was common
during that time era. Come on in and meet Amos - you'll be glad you
did!

DOCUMENT

 A rare acquisition
this summer was an original 1792 document discussing payment for services
rendered in the Revolutionary War and signed by Town Clerk, Peleg Cross,
who also served in the war. Peleg's family settled and lived in
Cross' Mills for over two centuries. Stanton, Sheffield, Hoxsie,
Babcock and Saunders are some of the other early colonial names appearing
on this document.
CHS plans to have this artifact
preserved at the Northeast Documentation Conservation Center as we have
with many of the other priceless relics in the Archive. It will be on
permanent display shortly.

We'd
like to remind you to mark your calendars now for this upcoming event.
This year we will present the encampment on a larger scale, including
scheduled skirmishes between the British and the Colonial Militias aided by
French Troops in the battle for freedom. Also on hand will be the
Cape Cod Blue Jackets Fife & Drum Corps and many period vendors
including blacksmiths, weavers, cooking demonstrations, etc.
The
Ricci Family has lovingly restored this original 100-acre farm allowing CHS
to bring its history back to life.
