QUESTION: What are they
going to do about it?
Trump’s highly publicized feud with Senator Bob
Corker (R-TN) this morning revealed just how fractured the Republican Party has
become under the stewardship of our reality television president.
Corker is not seeking reelection, and so recently he’s been able to be more honest about what he thinks of Trump’s failed administration.
Corker is not seeking reelection, and so recently he’s been able to be more honest about what he thinks of Trump’s failed administration.
Now, in a stunning new interview with The New York Times Corker
has gone into greater detail about the dangers Trump poses.
He said he believes that Trump’s unhinged behavior could set the United States, “on the path to World War III.”
He said he believes that Trump’s unhinged behavior could set the United States, “on the path to World War III.”
Corker’s analysis is terrifying, but not totally surprising
given the ominous rhetoric Trump has been using towards North Korea.
“He concerns me. He would have to concern
anyone who cares about our nation,” Corker told the Times.
Presumably, Corker would include his fellow Republicans in that number, so their continued silence speaks volumes.
It almost seems like Corker is trying to act as a proxy voice for the rest of his party, most of whom aren’t yet ready to disown a president who supports their regressive agenda.
“I know he has hurt, in several
instances, he’s hurt us as it relates to negotiations that were underway by
tweeting things out,” Corker revealed.
As the Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign
Relations, Corker is uniquely qualified to make such an assessment. It’s a
blunt confirmation of what many of us have feared for months. Twitter does not
offer a venue for conducting successful diplomacy.
“I don’t think he appreciates that when the president of the United States speaks and says the things that he does, the impact that it has around the world, especially in the region that he’s addressing. And so, yeah, it’s concerning to me,” Corker added.
Corker then went into
greater detail about the prevailing view within the GOP. They seem to view the
president as someone who must be coddled like a child, given instructions and
direction so that he doesn’t plunge headfirst into utter catastrophe.
“Look, except for a few people, the vast majority of our caucus understands what we’re dealing with here, of course, they understand the volatility that we’re dealing with and the tremendous amount of work that it takes by people around him to keep him in the middle of the road,” Corker said.
It’s alarming that the
rest of the Republicans realize that Trump is unfit to hold the presidency but
refuse to speak out. They’re so hellbent on passing tax cuts for the wealthy
using Trump’s rubber stamp of approval that they’re willing to let him imperil
the entire world.
“I don’t know why the president tweets out
things that are not true. You know he does it, everyone knows he does it, but
he does,” said Corker.
Hopefully, Corker
continues to speak out against Trump for the remainder of his term. His sudden
courage could inspire other Republicans to coalesce against Trump. Issues like
these have to be more important than party loyalty.
