Program to reunite people and their property wins award

YOUR MONEY Initiative Wins National Recognition

State Treasurer Seth Magaziner's YOUR MONEY program, which automatically reunites Rhode Islanders with their unclaimed property, received recognition from The Unclaimed Property Professionals Organization (UPPO), a national nonprofit.

"We created YOUR MONEY so that Rhode Islanders can receive their missing money automatically," said Treasurer Magaziner. 



"Most people don't know that they have missing money with the State. YOUR MONEY belongs to you, I want to get it back in your pocket where it belongs."

About 1-in-5 Rhode Islanders have unclaimed property waiting for them. In the past, residents have had to check the state's database to see if they have unclaimed property and then submit a claim. 

YOUR MONEY matches unclaimed property with known addresses, so money can be returned automatically.

"Treasurer Magaziner is breaking through the red-tape in Rhode Island by returning money to residents automatically through the YOUR MONEY program. These are the bold innovations governments should be making to better serve the public," said Toni Nuernberg, Executive Director, Unclaimed Property Professionals Organization.

Rhode Island's Unclaimed Property program received UPPO's Members' Choice State Legislative Award for the YOUR MONEY program.

To date, the Treasurer's Office has automatically processed claims for over 35,000 individuals through the YOUR MONEY program. 

While YOUR MONEY will automatically match thousands of Rhode Islanders, all residents are encouraged to visit findRImoney.com to see if the state is holding unclaimed property that it rightfully theirs.
