Rescued seal begins new life in waters off Charlestown

Mystic Aquarium Splashes in to World Oceans Day with Seal Release

There is no better way to kick-off World Oceans Day than with a success story!

Earlier today, Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program, along with well over 100 Aquarium friends, beach-goers and community members, celebrated the release of a young female gray seal.

Like many of the Aquarium’s rescued sea animals, she was released from Charlestown’s Blue Shutters Beach.

Eleuthera (el-OO-thur-uh), whose name derives from the feminine form of the Greek adjective eleútheros, meaning “free,” was rescued in Cape Elizabeth, ME by Marine Mammals of Maine.

She was transferred to Mystic Aquarium in early April to receive treatment for pneumonia and anemia at the Animal Rescue Clinic.

Weighing nearly 66 pounds at time of release, Eleuthera was deemed healthy and prepared for life back at sea.

Back on dry land, Mystic Aquarium will continue the celebration with a World Oceans Day event tomorrow, June 9 from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

Guests can get tips on how to become more #SeaSavvy, learn about sustainable seafood options, discover ways to minimize marine debris and more with tabletop presentations, activities and crafts throughout the Aquarium’s Main Gallery.

While on campus, Mystic Aquarium invites guests to experience the “Our Blue Parks” exhibit on the mezzanine.

As part of the World Oceans Day experience, guests are also invited to take action by completing comment cards in support of continued protection for the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts. Activities are free to members and included with Aquarium admission.
