UPDATE: Since Joe Trillo's silly accident off Charlestown Beach occurred over the weekend, Trillo has done his best to make it worse. Emulating his political inspiration Donald Trump, Trillo LIED about how it happened - saying he hit a rock that was uncharted while half a mile off the beach. I.e. not his fault, but rather that of his rescuers, the Coast Guard or maybe NOAA or whoever.
But as photos and video show, Trillo was actually cruising along Charlestown beach, in classic Soprano's style (see video at the end of this article or click here), just 100-300 feet off short, blaring music). The Coast Guard says that Trillo will not be charged for his escapade.
Far-right wing politician Joe Trillo was obnoxiously campaigning off the beach near the Charlestown Breachway when his yacht struck a rock and started taking on water.

Trillo
is a former Republican member of the General Assembly who is running as an
independent for Governor.
Trillo was the chair for Trump’s campaign in Rhode Island. Perhaps he was motivated to come to Charlestown by our town’s only vocal Trump supporter, Jim Mageau.

And
he crashed on the rocks. I’m not making this up.
Here’s
the account from the US
Coast Guard who were called in to rescue him:

Thank you to the Charlestown, RI Harbormaster and Safe Sea for helping us assist the 65-foot yacht Lady M this afternoon!Coast Guard watchstanders received a 911 relay call from the Lady M at around 11 a.m. stating they had struck a rock near the Charlestown Breachway and were taking on water. The Charlestown Harbormaster arrived on scene and safely removed all four passengers and crew. Two 45-foot response boat crews from Coast Guard Station Point Judith responded and used dewatering pumps to keep up with the flooding. With the flooding under control, the commercial salvage and towing company Safe Sea took over. They are expected to bring the yacht and passengers back to port. #SAR #Partnerships #AlwaysReady
Based on the time stamp and the Coast Guard report, the photo in this Trillo tweet was taken minutes before he crashed. |
Up until he crashed on
the rocks, his presence off the beach was just an annoyance to beach-goers, but
then things got more entertaining, as beach visitor Cheryl Burgess reported:
It was such a beautiful day listening to the surf, and this jerk comes out of nowhere, blaring Stars and Stripes. He had a huge banner with his campaign info, flapping on the side. It was like a robo call on the beach. He tried to get into the dinghy, but they couldn't get it started. 2 small tugs, 3 police boats, 2 large tugs, one CG plane and a CG helicopter. There was also quite the police presence watching from the lifeguard chair. Who pays for all this, the good people of RI?
So
much irony to pack into one little incident. Trillo the campaign spoiler may
the Gina Raimondo’s best bet for re-election if Trillo takes away enough votes
from her Republican challenger, most likely Cranston Mayor Allan Fung.
Trillo
hates the federal government and praises Trump’s efforts to destroy it. Yet
when he was in trouble, who comes to his rescue?
Thanks
for the visit, Joe. Don’t come back.
