URI to host distinguished Nobel Prize nominee for its International Women’s Day conference

The University of Rhode Island will feature Nobel Prize in Literature nominee, Dacia Maraini, as part of its International Women’s Day conference on Friday, March 5, from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m.

Maraini’s works are focused on topics such as women’s rights, violence against women, diversity and inclusion, feminism, gender equality, and LGBTQIA+ rights.

The conference will include a short presentation, a question-and-answer session, and breakout room discussions on major themes occurring in her works.

Brief welcoming remarks will be given by URI President David M. Dooley and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Nedra Reynolds. The conference will also feature distinguished scholars from Yale University; University of Texas, Austin; UCLA; University of Valencia, Spain; Roma Tre University, Italy; and more from all over the world.

About Dacia Maraini

Maraini is a popular Italian writer, poet and a distinguished scholar of women’s studies.

She was also a finalist for the Man Booker International prize and the Nobel prize in Literature in 2012. She has also won multiple Italian literature awards such as the Premio Campiello, the book-of-the-year award in Italy, for her novel The Silent Duchess (La lunga vita di Marianna Ucria), in 1990. In 1999, she was awarded the Premio Strega prize for her novel, Darkness. Maraini’s books have also been translated in 22 countries.

Apart from publishing books, she also actively writes for many highly respected Italian newspapers, including Il Mondo, Paese Sera, L’Unità, Corriere della Sera, Io Donna, and La Stampa.
