Spanky Sunbathing

As New England Heats up, Mystic Aquarium Keeps it Cool!

With record-breaking highs, the marine mammals remain chill while the reptiles embrace the heat. Temperature factors into keeping animals conformable, and humans are no exceptions. As the hot summer continues, you can beat the heat at the aquarium by finding your zen, sipping cold drinks, and possibly leaving your mark on the community for decades to come.

new beluga whales

Bring the Hottest Name to the Arctic Coast

In the cold waters of the Arctic Coast exhibit, a young beluga awaits a new name from a lucky individual! Will the name reflect beluga's icy cold environment or its fiery, youthful personality? The decision will be left to chance. Starting today, we are holding a raffle for naming one of the belugas. Raffle tickets are $10 and act as a donation to support the whales and our research. We will announce the winner on September 30, and the individual will officially welcome the beluga into the Mystic Aquarium community by providing a name to the whale.

Sips at Sunset

Order your favorite drink and watch the belugas. Take a stroll through Jurassic Giants. Dip your hand into the shark touch. It is your weekend kick-off, so celebrate it how you want! Sips at Sunsets occur on July 16 & 23 and August 8 & 20, and we will see you at sunset! Learn more.

Sea Lion Up Close

The New Sea Lion Show is Fire!

Escaping the burning sun with the newest sea lion show: Connecting with Conservation! We provided sea lion demonstrations throughout June and launched our first official show in over a year. Connecting through Conservation explores sea lion behaviors and growing concerns to protect the ocean. The performances include lights, music, and a rehearsed performance and now occurs four times a day!

BeluYOGA

Stretch Out in Front of the Coldest Habitat

Our hot take is that the locust pose should be called the seal pose. We frequently see that position in the Pacific Northwest exhibit. You can find your zen with the "seal pose" with our new Wellness Wednesday class, BeluYOGA. Every Wednesday morning and evening in July, a local yoga instructor will guide the class through a session benefiting everyone physically and mentally. The Arctic Coast underwater viewing area will provide the perfect backdrop to add to the experience.

Entangled Minke Whale

Tragic Loss of a Minke Whale

Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program responded to the tragic loss of a Minke whale entangled in fishing gear found deceased off the coast of Pt. Judith, RI. Our Animal Rescue Program staff and the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society performed a necropsy on the juvenile male whale and collected the gear for further analysis. The death of this whale, likely from anthropogenic causes, exemplifies the need to prioritize investment in conservation research to combat the extinction of cetaceans across the globe. The data collected by our team is relayed to the National Marine Fisheries Service informs legislation for the protection of these species.
