The University of Rhode Island’s Cooperative Extension will host an open house at the East Farm Agricultural Experiment Station in Kingston on Aug. 21 to provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about a wide range of topics, from gardening and cooking to coyotes and ticks.

The free event will feature tours, presentations, educational displays, and much more. It will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine.

“We’re so pleased to renew this long-held tradition of hosting an educational open house at East Farm after the pandemic put things on hold last year,” said Rudi Hempe, the URI Master Gardener volunteer coordinating the event.

“There won’t be plant sales, but there will be plenty of activities highlighting all the amazing research and public engagement that happens throughout the year at East Farm.”

The numerous buildings at East Farm are home to a variety of research, educational and public engagement programs, all of which will have activities and exhibits during the event.

URI Master Gardeners will give tours and answer questions about vegetable and herb gardening, efforts to accommodate pollinators, and water conservation.

Staff from the Rhode Island Natural History Survey will provide information on coyote research in the state; scientists from the Tick Encounter Resource Center will offer information on avoiding tick diseases; and members of the state 4-H office will provide program information.

In addition, the event will feature two vegetable cooking demonstrations by professional chefs, a tour of the bumblebee and wildflower gardens, and a walking tour of the pollinator meadow project, which is now in its fifth year.
