Fellow Residents of Charlestown,
Local government relies on citizens to populate the
committees and commissions to provide guidance to town government.
The Town is currently seeking applicants for the
Charter Revision Advisory Committee, the Ad Hoc Ordinance Revision
Committee, the Town Administrator Search Committee, and other commissions and
committees.
The Charter Revision Advisory Committee meets to
discuss possible desired changes to Charlestown's Home Rule
Charter. That document is extensive,
specifying much of how our town government works. Inconsistencies
with current practice, obsolete sections, and rules that could be
improved are often uncovered. The Committee meets to compile
suggestions from the public and committee members, evaluate those
suggestions, and forward any suggested changes to the Town Council
for further consideration. Any resulting proposals would be brought
to the voters to approve.
The Ad Hoc Ordinance Revision Committee will
function like the Charter Revision Advisory Committee, but reviewing
town ordinances.
The Town Administrator Search Committee will
solicit candidates for Town Administrator, develop evaluation
criteria for the position, interview applicants, and bring one or
more finalists to the Town Council for selection and hiring.
Citizens with a variety of backgrounds will be helpful
on these committees and it is a great opportunity to learn more about
our town and its government.
The application form is available here.
Note that for the Charter Revision Advisory Committee, the Ad
Hoc Ordinance Revision Committee, and the Town Administrator
Search Committee, select "Other" and write the committee
name in.
These three are all considered "ad hoc"
committees, meaning existing commission and committee members may
join them in addition to the one they are already on.
