Looking for primary care for your kids?

Wood River Health is taking new pediatric patients

Wood River Health’s Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is accepting new patients under the age of 18 at its Hope Valley and Westerly, RI facilities.

A pediatric patient is a child or adolescent under the age of 18 who requires special care and accommodations due to their developing bodies. Pediatric patients have different needs than adults because they are more likely to get sick or injured.

Pediatric care specialists pay close attention to growth and development issues that don't usually affect adults.

Wood River Health’s resident pediatric care specialists is Maria McGurrin, DNP, MSN, CPNP is a board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who joined Wood River Health’s providers in June 2023.

McGurrin provides wrap-around, compassionate care to Wood River Health’s youngest patients. Infants and toddlers should have checkups several times a year, while children three years and older should have one every year.

She assesses each patient’s overall health and development including their physical, emotional and social needs. During well-child visits, she provides vision and hearing screens and administers routine immunizations.

She also provides school and sports physical exams.  If your student athlete needs a sports physical, parents or guardians should bring the required paperwork to the checkup appointment.

McGurrin has worked in a variety of clinical and non-clinical settings including pediatric primary care clinics, schools, community health centers, remote care management and as a consultant for practices applying for Patient Centered Medical Home Recognition. She is dedicated to providing pediatric primary care and promoting public health within rural communities.

Maria McGurrin earned her Bachelors of Arts Degree from Bryn Mawr College in Anthropology with a focus on physical and medical anthropological practice. She received both her master’s and her doctorate in Pediatric Nursing Practice from Massachusetts General Hospital’s Institute of Health Professions. McGurrin has additional experience in case management and public health responses to infectious disease.
